Course Development Instructions and Resources for Faculty

The Basics (Windows) a very basic description of getting started with screen shots.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

  • An instructor must register a course(s) on this website.
  • The Web-MC courses courses are "housed" on a server at Academic Computing and Network Services called Web-MC.
  • Once a course is registered, you will be furnished with a Course URL (website), a username and password.
  • There is also a student user name and password furnished but if a student has an ACNS account, they may use their garnet username and password to access password protected sections. Web-MC includes a class discussion board and a class mailing list. These areas are password protected. A student must use their garnet username/ password or the course username and password we furnish to enter this link. There is another file which is password protected linked in the resources section.
  • Workshops are held to teach the use of Netscape Composer to create course pages. You must have Netscape Communicator 4.0.
  • You may go to Netscape to download for free. You may also go to our help pages for more instruction on downloading Netscape and instruction on using Netscape Composer to create course web pages using the Web-MC template.

IMPORTANT NOTE - Please note that the newest version of Netscape (6.0) does not support the one touch publishing system and therefore cannot be used with Web-MC for Course Development.

Once a course URL is issued it can be typed in a Netscape 4.0 (or above) browser and the registered course Web-MC template will appear. This is a "framed website." There are two frames, the left-hand menu bar, and the right-hand informational frame. The first right-hand frame is named "mainpage.html.". To use Netscape Composer, follow the below directions. Make sure you have the INSTRUCTOR username and password close by, and your browser must be Netscape Communicator 4.0 or higher.
  • To edit "mainpage.html," click somewhere in the right-hand frame. The browser has know which frame is to be edited. In the case of Web-MC, it is always the right-hand frame.
  • After clicking inside the frame... Go to File -> Edit Frame
  • Netscape Composer is opened. There is a table visible with many different boxes. These boxes should have the specific course information typed in the areas we suggest.
  • Look at the top tool and menu bars of Composer. Note they are similar to most word processing software.

Once completed, press the "Publish" icon (circle on toolbar below)

      • The below textbox will open which will have the name of the file "mainpage.html," the course URL (http://....) and two more boxes which ask for entry of username and password.

Please note the forward slash after http://tst000-05.fsu.edu/. This must be placed after the HTTP file
. This will be done if you upload from your course URL. If you upload from a disk and have to type in the HTTP name the "/" must be added to the end of the HTTP name or an error message will appear.

      • Please enter username and password.
      • Leave "Files Associated with this page" checked.
      • Press OK.
      • A question may appear related to uploading associated files, press "yes."
      • You will get a message, "Your file has been uploaded successfully."
      • Click the "Preview" icon on the Composer menu bar. You will then see your edited page via the World Wide Web.

This process will work for all the component pages in Web-MC. You can click on the "Syllabus" link on the menu bar. Your right-hand frame will change to the outline we have provided for a syllabus. Click in the right hand frame (let your browser know which frame you want to edit). Go to File->Edit Frame. This opens Netscape Composer. Once Composer is open, go to any word processing program, open a syllabus in the word processing program and copy and paste it into the "syllabus.html" open in Netscape Composer. Once the syllabus had been completed, press the "Publish" icon and enter instructor username/password and file will be uploaded to Web-MC server.

ADDITIONAL HELP CAN BE FOUND AT http://webmc.fsu.edu/help/facultyhelp.html

A word of caution, the username and passwords are case sensitive. The Netscape Composer/browser has a "memory.". If the wrong username or password is entered, an "Error Uploading Files" message appears. The browser will continue to remember the wrong password, even if the correct password is entered. The only remedy is to CLOSE THE BROWSER/COMPOSER and start over. Sorry! That is not us - but Netscape.

We have workshops available. The workshops will go over each process step by step. See the schedule.

Permissions have been set on the Web-MC server enabling the "one-button" publishing. The option to do "one button publishing" is not available on the Garnet or Mailer servers. The class discussion board and the class mailing list are not available except on the Web-MC server.

Netscape Composer is only one option. You may code directly in HTML or use other HTML editor. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) can be used instead of the Netscape publishing option. It is not necessary to set permissions. Your host name is the URL of your class (issued upon Web-MC registration) , your user ID is the user name issued upon registration as well as password. Guidelines for these options are provided in the help section.

SUPPORTING FILES (not to be edited)

These two files will be in your directory are necessary for your page to appear as it does, with a static left-hand menu bar, and a right-hand page changing when you click on an icon. Do not change as these files are your frameset.

index.html The Web-MC template is called a "frames based site." The left hand menu bar "calls" in the right-hand file. The left-hand menu bar is static. This happens "behind the scenes" only because "index.html" is "telling" the frames how to work together. It is the frameset. Do not overwrite this file. If you do, contact faculty@webmc.fsu.edu. It can be replaced.

menu.html This file is the left-hand menu bar on your monitor. It must not be edited.

PASSWORDS

An instructor is issued two sets of username/passwords upon course registration. One (user name and password) is for the instructor and is used only by the instructor to edit files and upload files. Please keep this in a safe place.

Students may use their Garnet username and password or the single username and a single password for all students enrolled in a course we furnish. These should be distributed to students on the first day of class via the instruction sheet included with this packet.

COMMUNICATION OPTIONS

To enable communication with your students: You must activate your class mailing list. THIS MAILING LIST IS NOT ACTIVE UNTIL THE SEMESTER BEGINS. The URL to do this is linked in the class mailing list of a registered course. It is under the "Communications" link.

A class mailing list is automatically set up for every course at FSU by Academic Computing and Network Services (ACNS) but is not activated until an instructor requests the activation. This mailing list is updated daily. If someone adds a course, his or her name will be added to a course mailing list within 24 hours. When a student drops a course, his or her name is deleted from the course mailing list within 24 hours.

A student must have a "garnet" or "mailer" account to be on the registrar's e-mail list. There are instructions on how to acquire an e-mail account at ACNS.

A student can have their mail forwarded to another e-mail account once the register for a garnet account. They will then be on a class mailing list for any course they are registered for. Students may find additional information on this by clicking the HELP icon in the Web-MC template.

  • IMPORTANT - when you are communicating in the web discussion board, you have to hit the refresh or reload icon at the top of your browser! Your web browsers store pages on your computer so they don't have to go "out into the web" all the time to load in pages you look at all the time (your cache). When you post a message, you want your browser to go to the web server you have posted the message to frequently - so you can get the most update messages. Hit SHIFT - RELOAD to do this.
