What is Web-MC for students?Web-Mediated CourseAssistant (Web-MC) is a course template or course shell in which instructors upload their course materials on the web. Any course using the Web-MC template is providing "web support" for the course. The Web-MC courses have a similar look to make naviagation for students easy. You can access the password protected sections of Web MC by using your ACNS (Academic Computing and Network Services) email username and password.

How Web-MC can help!

  • The Web-MC template has e-mail links to your course instructor, other contact information, current syllabus, current calendar and assignments, and different types of resources. You can access this information any time of the day or night.

  • The RESOURCES link of the Web-MC template links to on-line library resources, electronic reference resources, on-line newspapers, and Internet search engines to name a few. Check it out!

  • Under the COMMUNICATION link you can have on line discussions with others in your class by entering a web discussion board with the user name and password the instructor furnishes for you. You will be added to a course mailing list if you have a garnet e-mail account from FSU (instructions on how to obtain are below) and can email fellow students.
What you need to participate in a Web-MC Class.
  • A must - your personal garnet e-mail address: You will need to have an FSU e-mail account with Academic Computing and Network Services (ACNS) to be included in the course mailing list of your Web-MC course. If you do not have an account you can obtain one through CARS, the ACNS computer account registration page. This is an online registration form. You will need your social security card and a valid FSU card.

  • A course URL (uniform resource locator - the http:// ... address), username and password - You may use your Garnet username and password to access the password protected sections of the class you are enrolled in. If you do not have a Garnet account you are entitled to one. Go to the ACNS website and register for one..These will be furnished by your instructor. If you forget it - ask someone else in the class. The password is unique to the class and section only. You will need this password to enter the Communication section of any Web-MC course. The username and password are also case sensitive - if the letter is lower case, it has to be typed in lower case. Upper case has to be typed upper case.

  • Access to a computer:  Access your Web-MC course either from your home computer or from a computer on campus in one of the many computer labs. You can use either Netscape or Internet Explorer as your Internet browser, it does not matter. If you do not have a computer at home or in the dorm, you can access a computer from school.

  • If you plan to access the web from home, you are entitled to a free PPP account, which is also provided by ACNS. A PPP account is requires software to be loaded on your computer at home to enable it to talk to the FSU Network (access the Internet via a modem).
You will need a PPP username and password for access which initially is the same as your garnet e-mail account - which brings us to the next bullet.

  • Forward Your Mail: If you just don't want to give up your other e-mail address, but you need a FSU (garnet) e-mail account to receive information from your Web-MC course - we have the answer for you--- FORWARD YOUR MAIL to the e-mail account you want to use.
  • Add yourself to a class list -go to and go to fourth bullet down. Follow instructions. You must have an FSU card to do this.

  • If you need training on software products, FSU has contracted to give you this opportunity online. Go to this website for more information.

If you have questions about or problems with Web-MC contact students@webmc.fsu.edu. There is more student computer information located at this website.
