Macintosh Basics

NOT FOR NETSCAPE 7.0

MAC USERS & Netscape Composer (DO NOT USE NETSCAPE 6.0 - only the 4.0 versions)
The Web-MC courses are "housed" on a server at FSU. The website is a "framed website." The left side of your monitor is stationary - the navigation. You edit the right hand "window." A more detailed explanation can be found by going to our "How Frames Work" page.

OPENING A PAGE IN NETSCAPE COMPOSER

Once a course URL is issued it can be typed in a Netscape 4.0 (or above) browser and the registered course Web-MC template will appear (bookmark this page).

This is a "framed website." There are two frames, the left-hand menu bar, and the right-hand informational frame. The first right-hand frame is named "mainpage.html" (this has your contact information).

Your browser must be Netscape Communicator 4.0 or higher. Netscape Communicator comes packaged with Netscape Composer, an HTML editor, which is what you will edit you course in.

  1. Type in the website address we have sent you.
  2. To edit a page, click somewhere in the right-hand frame. The browser has to know which frame is to be edited. In the case of Web-MCK12 it is always the right-hand frame.
  3. Go to File -> Edit Frame (Make sure you do not click Edit Page).
  4. Netscape Composer is opened. There is a table visible with many different boxes. These boxes should have the specific course information typed in the areas we suggest.
  5. Look at the top tool and menu bars of Composer. Note they are similar to most word processing software.
  6. Once you have made your changes, press the PUBLISH button at top of page (if you are on a MAC - please read MAC directions). You will be prompted to enter the username and password we have sent you. If you do not know the ".html" name of your page, look up to the very top of your computer monitor and it will tell you. (IF YOU DO NOT TYPE IN THE NAME OF THE WEBPAGE YOU ARE WORKING ON - WHEN YOU UPLOAD YOUR NEW WEBSITE WILL BE WITHOUT THE NAVIGATIONAL BUTTONS. CONTACT Joanna - jsouther@mailer.fsu.edu and we can fix).
  7. After you hit PUBLISH and your files are successfully uploaded, you must go back to your browser (you are in editor at moment). Hit RELOAD - and your new page will appear.

    .

  8. The above is a screen shot of what your publish screen looks like. If you are in a secure area - like your home, you can check "Save Password" and your password will be saved. We do not recommend doing this at your school. Keep your username and password in a secure place.
