Web-Mediated
CourseAssistant (Web-MC) is template created for faculty to provide web support
for courses offered at Florida State University. This system furnishes:
- A course template (linked from entry page) or course shell,
a course URL (web address), and a unique username and password
that enable an instructor to edit and upload course information
into the web template.
- Server space maintained for faculty 24 X 7 by Academic Computing
and Network Services (ACNS).
- A
class mailing list that is updated daily with information from
the Registrar's database.
- A
web discussion board
- The ability to upload class information with one "click,"
after a onetime entry of username and password to upload course
pages to be on the Internet.
What this means is with Netscape Communicator 4.0 or Netscape
7.0 versions loaded on a computer or laptop and with an Internet
connection. Netscape can be downloadeded from www.netscape.com.
Web-MC can be edited at school, at home, or even
remotely when traveling.
Assistance is available for faculty to create a web supported
course either through workshops, or by emailing faculty@webmc.fsu.edu.
Web-MC provides students a
common way of accessing and navigating through course material yet
is flexible so faculty can develop their course Web site in a way
that best fits their material and approach. There are links to a
syllabus, calendar, course resources, communication, assignments
and help.
How
Web-MC works:
- An
instructor registers a course(s) using our form, Register a Course, on
this web site.
- Once
a course is registered, a course URL (website), a web discussion
board, and a class mailing list are generated on the Web-MC
server. The class mailing list is activated five days before
classes begin. The class mailing list is password protected.
Students must have an ACNS
account to be on this list. There are instructions for students
under the Help link in the Web-MC template on acquiring an ACNS
account as well as the option to forward mail.
- Immediately after the course set up is complete, the instructor
is furnished with the course URL, a username, and password.
The username and password are to be used by the instructor to
edit their materials via the web.
- Students
must also have a username and password to access the Communication
link as well as any other password protected materials. FSU
students can use their ACNS username
and password for access, or they can use the username and password
the WebMC system provides for them.
- Workshops
will be available at the faculty support lab
that has been located at 227 Rovetta (COB). These workshops
will instruct in the use of Netscape Composer to create course
pages for the web and the one button publishing feature created
for Web-MC courses. There is a schedule of workshops
on this website.
